The Strand Bookstore, New York City’s legendary home of 18 miles of new, used, and rare books, will celebrate the publication of XCIA’s Street Art Project: The First Four Decades by Hank O’Neal (aka XCIA) by having street artist Toofly create street art on the 12th Street side of the store on walls that have long been blank. Not only is this the first time the Strand Bookstore has ever allowed anyone to paint their walls, but for years they actively kept graffiti off their walls.
Toofly aka Maria Castillo has public works dating back to 2000, including live paintings, group exhibits, and all-female productions in Brooklyn, Harlem, LA, Berkeley, Miami, Berlin, and even Ohio. The self-described “Rebel Girl” hails from Quito, Ecuador and is co-founder of YOUNITY—an all-female urban arts collective whose mission is to steadily push forward young women in the arts through organizing visual art exhibitions, markets, and mentorship art programs.
